Race Day

The day has arrived and I survived. Whoohoo!

As you know, I had 3 goals for the half marathon today:

1.) First to finish. Check.
2.) Run the entire way. Check.
3.) Do it faster than last year. Check.

Yay! I finished in 2 hours 16 minutes and 20 seconds. Exactly 6 minutes 2 seconds faster than last year. After how hot it's been in recent days, I lucked out with the weather, and it cooled off to 70, which is still hot to run in if you ask me.

Dale, my pal Casey and the kids came out to cheer me on, and I absolutely loved it. I saw them at mile 5 and smiled for nearly a mile before I remembered that I wasn't even halfway done. Ugh. Then as I rounded the corner into the final stretch at Memorial Stadium, I heard them cheer for me. That's when having a name like Gail comes in handy, because I knew exactly who said it and that they were cheering for me. :)

It was not easy. It was hard. And I think it was almost harder to run this year than it was last year. It could be that I trained a whole lot harder last April compared to this year. I just flat out wasn't in the best shape I could be in.

There were a few times when I thought it'd be awesome to run a full, but as I ran, I decided that running a full marathon is not going to be in the cards for me. 13.1 miles is already a ridiculous amount of running and I just don't think that the pain of running 26.2 would be worth it to me.

However, I would do a half again. Maybe soon. I guess it's going to depend on if I continue running over the next busy months, or if I take a break. Overall, today was great, I accomplished my goals and I survived. It can't get much better than that.
