A fair weekend

We live between two county seats, which happen to host their respectable county fairs each fall. Normally the two counties kind of alternate weekends to throw their fairs, but this year they both fell on the same weekend.

For someone like me, I was delighted by this decision. It meant that I would only have to pay for the kids to ride rides once and not twice as I would have had to do if it were two separate weeks. Yay for me!!!

Anyway, the kids and I decided to head to the Seward fair Friday because it was Kids Day and Lincoln's own String Beans were going to be playing. Now, I can't pass up a chance to see the String Beans, mainly because I used to work with Randy, a fellow graphic designer and the greatest member of the Beans. I also wanted Parker to try Mutton Bustin', which was that evening.

So from 3pm -6pm Friday the kids and I braved the heat. We saw all the animals, the exhibits, some of the Beans show (Macy was antsy, so we couldn't stay long), and lastly, Parker did some Mutton Bustin!

You may view this fantastic ride here:

And seeing the greatest model train set-up in the world. The kids were both in awe.

We returned to the fair again on Saturday bright and early at 8:45. They were having a youth fishing tournament, and we can't pass something like that up. Dale's brother, Tyler, joined us for a few fun hours of fishing. We lucked out and it actually cooled off quite a bit on Saturday. I even had the kids in pants. Parker ended up randomly catching a 7 inch catfish when we went to reel in his line to check if he still had bait. It was pretty awesome.

At the end of the two hours, Parker was one trophy heavier for catching the first fish. His cousin Camden, right, got the trophy for biggest fish. He caught the biggest fish out of all the groups when a 24 inch carp tried to take off with his fishing pole. Some quick action into the water by his dad saved the pole and the catch! All the kids received new fishing poles and some extra goodies as well for participating. It was an amazing event.

After the fishing tournament, we walked the fair with my sister and her family. We revisited all the things we saw Friday, but added on the rides to the day. I don't know if you know this or not, but rides are way expensive these days. Tickets cost $1each, and the smallest rides take 4 tickets. Ridiculous. So for $20 each, the kids got wristbands. I didn't take many pictures of them on the rides, but I couldn't pass up getting one of my little aviators. :)

Today we perused through the York Fairgrounds, but I wasn't feeling it as much as the Seward fair. Maybe I was just faired out, or maybe Sunday is a bad day to attend any fair.

Either way though, we had a great busy weekend.
