Landlord and bugs

Today a man came by to inspect our house for termites. Of course, our landlord neglected to tell us he was coming, so we had a whopping 20 minute notice when he called Dale's cell phone to make sure we were home. I can honestly say that our landlord here, which is a local real estate company, is the worst I've ever had.

When Dale first signed the lease, they were supposed to get all the landscaping done and the carpets cleaned before we moved in. Well, fast forward to when we moved in, and the carpets where only vacuumed and the yard work not done. Dale asked the lady about it, and she swore up and down that it was done, and they had pictures and everything. However, when Dale asked to see the pictures of the finished yard work, they couldn't find them. Then when he asked about the carpet cleaning, they said that they wouldn't be doing it since the movers probably tracked some stuff in and it would be like we were getting a free carpet cleaning.

Next, our heater broke. Normally this wouldn't be a huge problem in the south, but of course that was the week that the temperature stayed in the mid-teens. We called the landlord numerous times before they sent somebody out to see what the problem was. We froze for nearly a week. A few weeks later, our water heater went out. Dale called the landlord about it, but of course it was a Saturday and they don't have an emergency number (which is insane to me). We had to call the landlord multiple times, and the day we thought it was going to get fixed, no one showed. Dale called the company that was supposed to come fix it, and they said they never got a work order from our landlord. So another call to the landlord was made and they admitted the fax didn't go through and they sent it again. We waited 5 days for hot water, and it was disgusting. Cold hair washes and wiping off with a wash cloth really doesn't compare to a hot shower.

The next landlord story revolves around bugs. We came home one evening to find the largest cockroach I've ever seen on our kitchen floor. Now, we've lived here for a few months and only one other time have I seen a bug in our house, and it wasn't one like this. I pretty much threw up after seeing that cockroach in my house and then we saw another. I'm still disgusted by it. Anyway, I called the landlord right away the next morning about it, and they said they'd call me back. Of course they didn't, and it was a Friday, so I had to live here all weekend in fear of these ginormous roaches. I called again the next week, and for once got same day service. The bug guy who came was super nice, and told me that those huge cockroaches are the state bird. Puke. But he also said they usually stay outside, so hopefully that wasn't a lie. We've only had a handful of dead bugs since he sprayed and that makes me feel better too because it's been a few weeks. Really though, I'm super grossed out that we even had one cockroach in our house. It makes me feel super dirty inside. Oh, and on top of everything, hornets keep getting into our house from somewhere. After the guy sprayed for bugs we found a good 10 dead ones on our living room floor, and every few days there's one flying around in here. Stupid south, and the stupid bugs.

Moral of today's rant, our landlord stinks and we have disgusting bugs.

  1. Oh Gail. All I can say is, someday you will look back on these times and laugh...or at least smile...I hope. :-)

Hang in there, girl. We woke up to a white winterland this morning!

  2. I hear ya! Those darn landlords... not so trustworthy. We too have had a few stories in our renting days and heard a few from other renters as well.
"This too shall pass." .. though not soon enough I know. Hang in there! :)

  3. Ugh, well I know what you mean about the cockroaches. I think unless you pay for bug service in the south, they are inevitable.....and giant. An inch and a half cockroach is so much scarier than the tiny ones I've seen in Nebraska. It's one of the few bugs I truly fear.

Hope things go better with the landlord!
