Mom, Mom, Mommy, mommy, mom

Happy Mothers Day to all you moms out there! Especially my mom.

A few reasons why my mom is great.

1. She taught me how to manage money at an early age. Lessons include saving money to buy things you want rather than financing, paying bills before spending money on yourself, and always keep an emergency stash of money just in case.

2. She showed me that you must work for what you want and there's no such thing as easy money. Skipping work for selfish reasons was unacceptable.

3. If I wanted something expensive, I had to pay for it. My first pair of Nike's were paid for with money I made working the fields. When I wanted a new car, I had to pay the $300 a month car payment each month.

4. She taught me the difference between wants and needs. I want to get my hair cut and colored regularly, but don't need to be paying $75+ every 6 weeks to do it. It was nice back in the day when I was only responsible for myself, but now Parker needs clothes and little Miss Dishman needs diapers.

5. She lets me make and learn from my own mistakes. She doesn't try to fix my problems for me. I hated this when I was younger, but I appreciate this so much now.

6. She doesn't play favorites between her children, or grandchildren, for that matter. I know of some families where this is a huge issue and it's such a good feeling to know that I don't have to worry about that.

7. She's there to help when needed. When my dad died. My sisters and I had to come up with $8,000 to bury our dad in a matter of days. Mom loaned us what we needed. When I owed in taxes the year Parker was born, she helped me. She always seems to just know when we're in a position where a small gift would go a long way. I can't even begin to tell you the feeling of relief I'd get when she'd save the day by buying the diapers or formula I couldn't quite afford on my own.

This is just a small list of why my mom is great. If I had all day, I could write more, but for now I have to go play trains with Parker.

Thank you for everything mom, you're the greatest. I love you!
